Is oak good for shelves?
Yes absolutely! Oak is one of the most common timber types for shelving due to the popularity of this particular wood. We have softwoods and hardwoods that we machine in to shelving, and our most popular hardwood is oak. It's durable, and versatile in the sense that the grain and colour has an appealing natural beauty, but can be oiled to any finished colour and styled to any look and feel (modern or rustic).
Are oak shelves yellow?
Due to oak being a natural product, the colour can differ somewhat from one piece to the next. In general it has a pale/light brown colour rather than a yellow tint that pine has for example. The advantage of wood though is that it can be oiled or painted to finish almost any colour whether it be light or dark, and we offer a wide selection on all shelves, coat racks and console tables.
What are the advantages of oak shelving?
Oak shelving is a durable and strong material that is resistant to wear and tear. It also has a beautiful and natural grain pattern that adds aesthetic appeal to any space. It's versatile and works great in different styles and colour finishes, making it one of our most popular wood types.
How do I clean and maintain oak shelving?
Oak shelving can be cleaned with a soft, dry cloth or a damp cloth if necessary. Avoid using abrasive cleaners or chemicals that may damage the finish or the wood. To maintain the finish, it is recommended to periodically apply a furniture polish, wax or re-apply the same product used when first ordered. Contact us if you require the product and colour of your previous orders.
How much weight can oak shelving hold?
This will vary greatly according to the type of bracket and the structure of the wall where you're fixing brackets or shelf supports. There isn't a 'one size fits all' answer as the wood itself will be strong enough to hold a substantial amount of weight, but the appropriate bracket needs to be used along with ensuring the wall is going to support any weight you intend to place on top of the shelves.
